Although its story does not start in Greece – most sources place the first use of coffee in Ethiopia and particularly in Kaffa’s Kingdom – coffee has a place in the Greek culture, as in almost every culture. The first indications of coffee use in Greece go many years back, to the Turkish domination (17th century), whereas the first coffee houses appeared in Thessaloniki.
Greek coffee – which is not filtered but blended with water – is traditionally boiled on ember or hot ciders, giving a heavenly aroma. And although modern life pushes us towards “fast” alternatives, many insist on tradition.
